Acoustic Underlay

£ 31.62 Inc. VAT

The sole function of an acoustic underlay is to reduce the amount of impact noise travelling through the floor from the movement of falling objects, footsteps and furniture on hard surface floors in any type of building. An underlay or floor underlayment is made of a thin layer of material such as fibre, felt, rubber or foam. Thin layers of material help cushion, sound absorb, insulate and reduce wear along your floor. It is often found that cork or foam make good acoustic underlayment options. Rubber, although it can act as an activator, is known to stain vinyl and would not be recommended. Hush consisting of cork and foam is a good example of a proprietary underlayment system designed for luxury vinyl tile. PU foam is the most recommended underlay for carpets because of its luxurious cushioning and underfoot comfort. It's heat-retaining, sound-reducing and available in a variety of thicknesses, densities and qualities to suit all budgets.

It is usually manufactured and supplied in single sheets or rolls which are then laid flat on the floor and installed between the floor level and the substructure below the floor ceiling in a building. When carpeting floors are constructed using light wood and joists, the typical standard underlay only reduces impact noise and offers little effect in reducing airborne noise transmission. Silent steps can significantly reduce both impact and airborne noise transmission through the floor system. This means that noise generated by speech and electronic audio technologies, such as radio and television, can be reduced along with impact noise such as footfall. A carpet underlay is another great way to combat unwanted noise – and much cheaper than having your home professionally soundproofed. If you still want to know if acoustic underlay really works, the answer is yes, it still works. The best material for a soundproof underlay is foam or a sponge. These materials are excellent at blocking sound and providing exceptional comfort, and we stock some fantastic options for all preferences and budgets.
